About Us
Celebrating our vibrant culture and building a strong community since 1990
About Bunts Sangha UK
Our
journey began in 1990, when five families came together under the leadership of
our first president, Mr. Rama Shetty. What started as a small community
gathering has now grown into a vibrant organisation of over 300 families across
the UK.
In the
early years, our group was largely made up of doctors and their families,
reflecting the significant influx of medical professionals into the NHS at the
time. Our very first meeting was held in Rochester, Kent, marking the beginning
of what would become an annual tradition — hosting gatherings in different
parts of the country each year.
Initially,
the office bearers served terms ranging from three to five years. In recent
times, we’ve moved to a two-year term to encourage greater participation and
fresh ideas. Over the past two years, we’ve also introduced exciting new
initiatives — including a mid-year event called Jaatre and a variety of
online competitions and contests to keep the buzz going and engage members of
all ages.
Today,
our members span across England, Wales, and Scotland, and our community has
grown to include professionals from a wide range of backgrounds — from creative
directors to finance specialists. While we have grown in size and diversity, we
remain rooted in the spirit of connection and shared values that brought us
together over three decades ago.
We are
also proud of our overseas connections, particularly our ongoing collaboration
with BANA (Bunt Association of North America). One of the most
meaningful outcomes of this partnership is our Bunt Roots section, which
showcases the work done to build a growing database of Bunt families around the
world. We invite you to explore this section — you may even find your own
family listed, or you can contribute by adding your family’s information to
help preserve our shared heritage.

About Bunts
The Bunt community originates from the Tulu Nadu region of coastal Karnataka and parts of northern Kerala, with a proud history rooted in leadership, landownership, and martial traditions. Historically, Bunts served as local chieftains and guardians under various South Indian dynasties. While their exact origins are a subject of scholarly debate, the community is often associated with ancient warrior lineages and royal ancestry. Today, Bunts are a vibrant, global community of over 1.2 million, contributing across professions while preserving their cultural heritage.
Bunts are known for their matrilineal inheritance system (Aliyasantana), ancestral homes (Guthu houses), rich traditions, and Daiva worship. Community identity is often reflected through family surnames such as Shetty, Rai, Hegde, and Chowta, which carry historical significance.
In the UK, Bunts Sangha UK plays a vital role in connecting members of the community—celebrating our roots through cultural events, supporting charitable causes, and fostering a strong sense of belonging among Bunts living abroad.
